Family Room

The Family Room served as an informal sitting room. During the day, the younger children played in this room, watched over by their mother or older sisters. The children received early schooling from their mother in this room. As was typical for this period, the Tredwells took many of their meals in this room. In the evening, a servant brought in an oil-burning lamp. It was customary for the father of the family to read aloud to the others as they sat around the table.
