Public programs at the Merchant's House -- including Ghost Tours -- often increase paranormal activity in the house, and guests attending events have reported experiencing something out of the ordinary. In April 2008, a woman who had attended a lecture wrote: “I sat in the first row. I took my jacket off and draped it over my shoulders. About 10 minutes into the presentation, I felt a gentle tugging at my left shoulder — someone was tugging the jacket sleeve. At first I thought the woman behind me had done it accidentally, but when I glanced over my shoulder, I saw she was too far away. I immediately surmised I had been touched by an unseen, full-time resident of the house.”

Tomorrow, the Landmarks Preservation Commission will review a proposal to allow construction of a 105-ft.-tall building at 27 East 4th Street, next door to the historic Merchant’s House Museum, one of our city’s first and most important landmarks, designated on the interior as well as the exterior. This proposal was heard this past March, with overwhelming public testimony in opposition. At the time the Landmarks Preservation Commission neither voted on nor discussed the proposal, which they will do tomorrow. No public testimony will be allowed, but comments can be submitted to the LPC.

In March, LPC held a public hearing on the NEW (!!) proposed development next door — building no. 3, which is not only taller than the previous design, but also adds more bulk, all of which heightens the risk of irreparable damage and the real possibility of collapse! Moreover, engineers predict our hidden passageway, the only intact Underground Railroad site open to the public in Manhattan, will suffer irreparable damage or be destroyed.
